Sometimes in my work, I need to start with the basics for my clients. Since we are used to thinking of our world as something that we see, thinking less about what we sense with our other senses, we forget that we are all ENERGY because we can't see that. We are energetic beings. We are RECEIVERS and we are EMITTERS of energy. And we have a life-force energy running through us - known as "Qi" (pronounced 'chee'). Because they are energy, even words In their simplest forms can sometimes hurt, or lift us up. The energy or vibration of the word(s) can make us feel sad, glad, proud, disappointed, ashamed, guilty, or otherwise. And because everything is energy there are many other things – sounds, fragrances, food, and even our thoughts – that can impact our energy field and the Qi running through us. But more on that later … “If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration.” – Nikola Tesla There are many building blocks, down to the level of the quanta in our universe, that make up our energy selves. But skipping the more in-depth physics lesson for now (I don't want to lose you!), I will simplify and start with the larger energy building blocks that we’ve known about for centuries – that of our meridians and our chakras. Traditional Chinese Medicine, in fact, focuses on the energy systems or highways through our bodies, our meridians. The meridians run in straight lines through the organs, glands, muscles, and bones of our bodies. Where and how they connect in the body can explain why an otherwise seemingly unrelated toothache may in fact be related to back pain. Each of these meridians have points that correspond to a specific area of the body and, if imbalanced, can be related to certain ailments or imbalances within our body. These points are the energy points to which acupuncturists apply tiny needles to stimulate the energy flow to help alleviate symptoms and ailments.
These meridians and chakras are within all of us and we all have the auric energy layers around us. So when I do my energy work, I look at these energy centers for all of my clients, both human and animal. As we go about our everyday lives, our energy body is constantly processing all of the “information” flowing to, through and around us. That information, or collection of energy vibrations, are the words, thoughts, food, fragrances, sounds, and other energy forms, and even the energy fields of others that we encounter. If you have a hard time imagining this, just picture the cellphone call bouncing from tower to tower until it gets to its intended destination. We can't see it but we know that it's happening when your call miraculously gets from one location to another. That simple little example is in fact what is going on with everything – not just our mobile phone calls. And this is what our energy bodies - starting with those auric layers around our bodies - are constantly processing, even if we don’t perceive it with our “typical” senses, i.e. our sight, hearing, taste or smell. You/your body feels different – but you may not have realized why exactly. You are in fact processing a lot more energy coming at you from a crowd of people than you are the trees and other inhabitants of nature. Now, contemplate:

weight from the news media, the stock market, work, and other external influences that barrage us with negative information or overall negativity. This is true right now especially. The feelings can feel heavy, irritating and even exhausting. Now, with kids home-schooling, and/or everyone from work, school, or elsewhere discussing negative information, you’re getting an influx of negative energy that can be difficult to avoid. That’s true whether those emotions come and go, like the evening news, or remain consistently due to a continuum of negative media, work realities or other influences. Multiply that by the number of people with whom you share a household and that’s a lot of “dirty bath water”. In my energy practice, I had one mother grappling with her parents visiting from outside the U.S. and constantly worrying if they’d be able to fly back home, her husband feeling negativity about the news, her young son having pent-up energy unable to play at school with friends, and a newborn baby at home to care for. She sought my help to alleviate her anxiety and to help her newborn infant as well. It turns out that she was indeed taking on a great deal from her environment, and not only that, but her infant had been absorbing an excess of stress hormones from both parents, which I worked to clear straight away! You yourself may have even made a commitment to avoid negativity as much as possible. But you’re still feeling irritable, sad, or helpless and don’t know why. It’s possibly that “dirty bath water” of negativity in your environment. Don’t Despair! You can “clean" that bath water It may sound ominous but there is good news! Even if others in your home are listening to negative media or engaging in social commentary about the same, or tend towards more negativity in general, you can “cleanse” that home environment. You do this by raising the vibration to more positive energy in the home with a few tools available to everyone. Some of these tools are listed on my website here, and I include some examples below. 1. Sound – We are all energy, and of course sound is no exception. There are many higher vibration sounds that we can listen to that literally shift that energy to a more positive vibration in our homes. Great examples of positive sounds, easily found on YouTube, Spotify, Apple Music and elsewhere, include:
3. Incense and sage – Burning incense and sage isn’t for those sensitive to them of course, but there are pleasant aromas available that are lighter than more “traditional” incense. Sage itself has a powerful vibration to it, and in this author’s opinion is quite earthy and enjoyable. I often go out to my garden and enjoy clipping the sage flowers as they emit that potent aroma. Of course, just like with candles, always keep an eye on anything that you burn in your home. Open a window, and enjoy the fragrance and uplifting feeling that you get from the shift when these are burned. And for you personally, there are a few other example practices, below. You can always share these rituals with others in your home, and bring goodness to all of the members of your household! 1. Gratitude – You might consider writing down ~3-5 things daily for which you’re grateful. This shifts your energy to a higher, more positive vibration. It helps put life in context and gives you richer meaning in your life despite many things that may otherwise trouble you. 2. Earthing or Grounding – Yes, this is your excuse to step out into the yard barefoot! Synchronizing our bodies with the earth’s core energy grounds us, and helps our bodies. For more on the benefits of synchronizing our body’s electrons with those of the earth, just go online or read a recent research paper on the topic here. What is the Mirror saying? In the meantime, you can practice mindfulness and pay attention to any lessons you may be getting from the negativity. Our interactions with others and the emotions it stirs in us can also be a mirror for what is going on in our own lives that we need to investigate at a deeper level. Negative Emotions are ok – as long as they don’t linger Of course, we all experience negative emotions – that is all a part of being human. This isn’t about avoiding our emotions. The key is to be able to handle them, process them through in due course, and then move along with life. You can be angry, frustrated, sad, and other negative emotions. But your intuition will guide you as to whether those negative feelings have remained too long and are starting to impact your relationships and your ongoing outlook on life. I hope these tips help you to keep your home “clean and clear” – full of positive energy, a state of well-being for all in your home, and hopefulness for the future. Just like the lady in the story above, sometimes we just get overwhelmed and need some extra assistance along the way. Meanwhile, here’s to the “cleanliness” of our thoughts, feelings, and emotions to get us through what remains of 2020 and beyond!! Rare and Random Encounters You might not know it but that rare, random encounter with a wild animal in your backyard, at a park, or elsewhere may very well have a message for you. The great indigenous peoples of our world had a deep connection to our animal brethren and learned from them in many ways. Yet over the years, from the many competing demands of TV, computers, our phones, and more stimulation for our attention, we lost that connection. The good news is that it’s still right there, whenever you choose to tap into it. Today, we are fortunate that Shamans and other indigenous people still abound and continue teaching what great wisdom our wild animal brethren can bring to us. I’ve had numerous examples in my own life in which a particular animal showed up. I looked up the meaning for that animal, and sure enough it had profound meaning for something I was experiencing in my life right at that moment. I have also had readings from others who have told me that a Hawk or other animal was at a particular place and time to deliver a message to me. These rare encounters are exactly that. Were you walking alone on a hiking path when a deer, coyote, bear, or other animal appeared from nowhere? Have you been in your backyard when an unusual bird species for your yard, such as a hawk or a crow, showed up? There are many resources – including Google and books on the topic - where you can learn more. I keep an app and a book to look up the meaning of specific animals that I encounter. See the Resources section below for some examples. Likewise, if you have a deep and unexplained connection to a particular animal species, they may be what is referred to as a “spirit animal”, "power animal" or “animal totem” in your life. They may stay with you your whole life to provide meaning or may stay for a finite period of time until you learn the “medicine” of their wisdom or message. Others may also show up with new lessons to guide you. We often miss the opportunity for their guidance until we become mindful and present to them. Whale and dolphin energy Because of their higher level of consciousness, the whales and dolphins are examples of animals who are waiting to be of service to us any time that we need them. Whether you’ve been in the water with them or on a boat encountering them, you know the energy already. It’s magical and difficult to describe. Encounters with these special animals leave us with a lightness, a happiness, a joy in our hearts that is truly unparalleled. Their healing also dovetails nicely with, although seemingly unrelated to, the healing power of sound therapy aka vibrational medicine and biofield tuning. Beyond any singular encounter I have had with whales in the ocean – and I have had many over the years – the one with the most profound and lasting effect on me was one I couldn’t even see - a "singer". Singers are typically individual males, singing while hanging suspended in deeper water. I could dedicate an entire blog to these songs, how they differ between hemispheres, how they evolve each year, the frequencies they contain. But what I so acutely recall is the reverberation – shifting from one part of my body to another as the frequency changed from very deep to very high - as I glided there in the water. Feeling revitalized, full of joy and amazement, I was forever changed. “The day science begins to study non-physical phenomena, it will make more progress in one decade than in all the previous centuries of its existence.” - Nikola Tesla When I snorkel off the coast of Maui during winter "Humpbacks season", I yearn to feel this again, as their songs carry as shallow as 3 feet under the surface. It’s not the same proximity or intensity of the sounds of my single whale that day in the Atlantic, but the Maui Humpback songs again fill me with tremendous joy. If you can’t swim, snorkel, or get to places where you can hear and feel the whales sing, not to worry. You can tap into that same energy anywhere. There are widely-available recordings of their songs – on CDs, online, on YouTube – and you can use them while meditating even thousands of miles away from them, to bring healing and joy into your life when you want or need it. You can also attend crystal bowl sessions – or buy the same bowls yourself - that use the same frequencies our cetacean friends use to communicate. Example resources at the end of the article.
