Nature & Energy Insights
Having difficulty making a major life decision? Stopped by fear from making that decision – fearing that you’ll make the wrong one? Confused by lots of conflicting opinions coming at you? Perhaps everyone is telling you what you “should” do or the clear choice that you “should” make, but somehow you’re paralyzed to make a decision.
"Trust your own intuition. Another’s mind isn’t walking your journey, you are.” - Scottie Waves
The Good News
You can take a deep breath…..The good news is, you have everything that you need. You may just be stuck in a position of unconsciously letting everyone else’s opinions speak over your own. You may be allowing those voices to drown out your inner voice, or intuition. Yes, our inner voices are fairly quiet – after all, we’re used to the physical world and our actual voices. Those inner voices are “quiet” unless we’re tapping into them on a regular basis, or even know to tap into them. We may, in fact, ignore them completely simply because we don’t know they’re there to guide us. That’s your intuition – it’s your friend, your guide, your “life coach” of sorts. And it would be such a shame to miss its guidance – given how much it’s there to help you through life.
"I am who I am because I trust my gut more than anyone else's opinion, and that is my best advice to you." – Oprah Winfrey
Before we start …. Stressed out?
Before I walk through the exercise, I want to point out that hearing or feeling your intuition is a bit harder if you’re in a high state of anxiety. If that’s the case, focus first on calming your mind. There are wonderful tools – from music to salt baths to essential oils and other tools – that you can use to calm and relax your mind.
The fact is that when we’re under high levels of stress, our brains get very focused. You’ve heard “fight or flight”. In this mode, it’s a survival scenario. Your mind is focusing to allow you to fight off whatever is threatening you. Except that this time, it’s stress – not an attack. Unfortunately, the brain prepares you and reacts the same way in both scenarios. It’s best to be in this state of mind as little time as possible. Long-term, this will lower our body’s immunity.
“Don't try to comprehend with your mind. Your minds are very limited. Use your intuition.” ― Madeleine L'Engle
Examples of your intuition
Your intuition can be quite subtle so if you are not used to tuning into it, the below examples will hopefully help:
“Intuition doesn’t tell you what you want to hear; it tells you what you need to hear.” Sonia Choquette
Tuning into your Intuition for the answer
It may be best to do this first thing in the morning before you’ve had coffee, read texts or email or even before reading or doing anything on your phone. You want to be in as close to a relaxed state of mind as possible. An alternative is to do it as your evening is winding down – before you get too sleepy.
Your goal is to listen to your body – notice any feelings, or subtle ways that your body gives you feedback to each scenario. Your goal is to get enough feedback that you know which scenario your intuition is helping you to choose– right here, at this stage in your life. The key is to picture yourself in each scenario as if you’ve already made the decision – think of it as watching yourself on a TV screen or on a video on your cellphone, living each decision
You don’t have to have a regular meditation practice to “listen” and hear your inner voice or intuition. You can tune in or tap into it simply by sitting in stillness, in a relaxed state, when you can be uninterrupted for at least 10 minutes’ time. You can use this exercise any time that you’re trying to make a decision, literally about anything in life. The trickiest part may be the subtlety of the answer. You can address that by being sure to take this quiet time to yourself without distraction. Think of it as a gift to yourself – an important one to help you with this life decision.
I will put a plug in for a regular practice of meditation, beyond these few moments of silence for big life decisions. It’s a wonderful tool to help bring clarity to your life on a regular basis, tap into your intuition to allow it to get “louder”, give you greater context for your life and many other wonderful benefits. Think of it as your regular 30,000 foot view of your life and the situation at hand vs. “on the ground” in the moment, sometimes clouded, view of your life.
Enjoy your new tool!
So now you have a tool that you can use to quiet out the “noise” and tune into the inner wealth of wisdom within you. You know the answers – it’s just allowing yourself to hear them that’s life’s challenge. And now you can overcome that one, too. ;-)

Until next time, Blessings….
When do you get the answers that you need in your life’s journey? Is it when you sleep? In messages through others? Through your intuition? I’ve learned that I receive it through all of the above - and through nature. Lately I have been exploring whether to pursue macro photography. I had recently rented 2 macro lenses to test and had been so disappointed. I learned that being 100% reliant on a tripod and being right on top of my subject matter was not for me. I didn’t want to scare the animals and insects of my fascination, and my camera gear is already heavy and cumbersome when I travel without necessitating a tripod, too. This week, while visiting family on the East Coast, I had rented one final lens before I was going to decide whether to give up my quest.
Arriving on the East Coast, I was exhausted. With a three hour drive to my destination ahead, and only an hour or so of sleep on my overnight redeye flight, it’s 6 am, and I’m asking myself: “What was I thinking taking a redeye?” With just 1 hour left in the drive, we stopped for an hour to wait for my nephew. At wit’s end, irritable, and just ready to be done with this drive is precisely when the magic happened….
I began to notice an odd phenomenon each time we stopped on the drive: a single dragonfly would appear, and would fly back and forth across the car, front to back, back to front. Now stopped on the side of the road awaiting my nephew, 2 things happened: first, an insect resembling a bee flew into the back window, just behind my seat, and just looked at me. Hmmm…. "Is he staring at me out of fear? He doesn't seem to be in any hurry to move away from me." So I gingerly grabbed my camera and took several shots (see above). Then I ever so gently ushered him back out into nature where he belonged.
Then, not one but two dragonflies landed on branches just beside me at the car’s edge. And they just stared at me. Yes – they looked right at me. Feeling confident that any moment they would fly off, I just sat and enjoyed their beauty in this special moment. But they didn’t leave. So again, I pulled out my camera, gingerly stepped out of the car, and began taking pictures. Still, they just sat. After I had snapped what seemed to be 100's of pictures, they flew up – and returned and sat back down in a new position. And again I took numerous shots of their new angles. And so it went on like this – the entire hour we waited for my nephew. Now, you might be thinking, “It’s just coincidence that they landed to charge in the sun at the very moment you pulled up in the car”. Except that they weren’t sitting in the sun. In many cases, I don’t even bother shooting in the sun for the myriad problems it poses in photography. Nope – this was just pure magic. I began to realize that they were perhaps here for another reason: to prove a point to me.
As the week continued and this happened again and again (on my father’s balcony as I walked by, on my father’s porch where I was sitting, on a nearby limb and then a lily pad at a friend’s house where I was visiting), I reflected that these were no coincidences. Macro photography was here to stay in my life, and the dragonflies were going to show me precisely how it was possible – with my existing lens and the third rental that I used for the shots that week..... I also was reminded of something I already new: life's obstacles are in your life for a reason. Embrace them!
I now have profound gratitude for my little "teachers". Thank you, bee and dragonflies – (and thank you to my nephew for taking so awfully long to get ready.) I shall do my very best to remember this “intentional magic” the next time I start to get irritated in life's unappreciated moments, when it is not moving as fast as I'd prefer. I hope that you will, too……
